Production began in April of our new TV documentary The Two Dereks - this is a film which follows the extraordinary life of the blind and severely learning impaired pianist Derek Paravicini, a rare musical savant who has the ability to play any piece of music after hearing it just once. The highlight of this film is a concert held at St George's Concert Hall in Bristol where Derek played for the first time ever with a full classical orchestra, The Emerald Ensemble, directed by Roger Huckle and conducted by Martin Pring. Derek played music with the orchestra by Pachelbel, Paganini, Bach and Rimsky Korsakov. The audience response was ecstatic and overwhelming with standing ovations. This was all filmed by Focus with the aid of five cameras! The book of Derek's life, In the Key of Genius, written by his mentor and music teacher Dr Adam Ockelford was published in May 2007 by Random House. This film is scheduled for transmission in early 2008.
Editing was finally completed of our interactive DVD Ready or Not for Bristol University's Graduate School of Education, hundreds of copies have been sent to schools all over the country. It shows how drama, supplied by Cardiff-based Theatre Iolo, can be used to support the transfer from primary to secondary school and was based on research by Professor Martin Hughes with the Home School Knowledge Exchange Project. Our most recent Dispatches investigation film for Channel 4 - The Drug Trial that Went Wrong was nominated for a Royal Television Society Award. |
